Genital Warts Treatments Explained

There are three main ways to get genital warts treatments. The three ways to receive the treatment are by the health care provider, the patient themselves or by laser surgery. The health care provider may use cryotherapy, podophyllin resin 10%-25%, Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) or Bichloroacetic Acid (BCA) 80%-90%. The doctor may also opt to remove the warts surgically by using scissors, shaving, or electrosurgery. The cryotherapy method is generally done every two or three weeks. The podophyllin resin, TCA and BCA are generally repeated every week or as deemed necessary by the doctor.

If the person to decides to administer their own treatment they will most likely be given either the Imiquimod 5% cream or Podofilox 0.5% solution or gel. The imiquimod cream needs to be applied once a day at bedtime. This should be done three times a week. It is not recommended to do this for more than sixteen weeks. The podofilox should be applied two times a day for three days. Then the person should go four days without using any of the solution. This process can be repeated up to four times. If the warts are not treated, meaning significantly reduced in size or removed after the recommended treatment time frames, then other genital warts treatments can be discussed with the patent's health care provider at that time.

Like anything else, getting treatment for genital warts has it's pros and cons. The positive is that the warts are no longer visible and there is a chance that the warts may not come back. The negative aspects are related to the uncertainty of the long term outcome of seeking treatment. The treatment may last for a certain length of time but there is always the possibility of the warts coming back. It has been found that genital warts treatments do not eliminate the possibility of getting a HPV infection.

Receiving genital warts treatments is somewhat of a catch 22 because if a person gets the treatment there is no absolute guarantee of the warts never coming back. But if the warts are not treated at all then a person risks the chance of the warts increasing in size or quantity. For these reasons it would probably be best to make the decision based off of personal feelings about the warts and referring to the advice of a health care practitioner. People also need to look into the various methods of treatment and the costs associated with each one and then make the decision based off of their insurance or personal budget constraints.
